This study aims to identify and analyze the apology strategies used by the characters in the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. A qualitative research approach was employed, focusing on the interpretation of written and spoken language in context. The data consisted of apology utterances expressed by the film’s characters, which were analyzed to uncover the types and functions of apology strategies used. The analysis revealed that the characters employed various forms of apology strategies, including indirect apologies, evasive strategies, expressions of concern, direct apologies, and explanations or accounts. These strategies were realized through several communicative functions, such as expressing a lack of intent, providing implicit acknowledgment, querying preconditions, showing concern for the listener, requesting forgiveness, expressing regret, and offering explicit explanations. Overall, the study highlights the complexity of apology expressions in film dialogue and underscores the relevance of pragmatic analysis in understanding how language reflects interpersonal relationships and social norms.
